Sivan Raphaely
Biography
Sivan was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, on a diet of MGM Technicolor musicals and roast chicken. She grew up belting Broadway classics around the house, much to the annoyance of her family, especially her pitch-perfect older brother, who was very critical at the age of seven!
To everyone’s relief, and with much support, Sivan went on to hone her raw talent at Pretoria Technikon, where she studied Musical Theatre for three years.
At the graduation ceremony, Sivan pulled a tongue at her older brother and gave him a now-I’m-qualified-to-annoy-you grin.

Sivan had an incredible theatre debut, joining theatre stalwart Malcolm Terrey in JO’BURG FOLLIES 2000, where she bore a striking resemblance to Monica Lewinsky. She was nominated for three FNB Vita Awards for her performance (as Monica, amongst others): Best Actress in a Musical (Johannesburg & Durban) and Most Promising Newcomer (Johannesburg)

In November 2000, she left South Africa for London, where she studied acting with the late David Bennett, former student and theatre director under Lee Strasberg at the Actor’s Studio, NY. She also used her time abroad to travel to India, where she bore a striking resemblance to a peasant.

Since returning to Johannesburg in March 2005, Sivan has worked non-stop. She has performed in several plays and musical theatre productions including MACBETH (Lady Mcduff), MODERN ORTHODOX (Hannah Zigglestein), MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (Balthasar) and played Sarah-Frigging-Brightman in the South African production of WE WILL ROCK YOU. This was followed by RENT (Maureen). RENT was directed by Broadway’s Anthony Rapp of the original production. In 2007, Sivan was nominated for a Naledi Theatre award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in Rent.

In 2008, Sivan was asked to play the lead, Scaramouche, in a six-month international touring company of WE WILL ROCK YOU through South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok where she had the pleasure of performing opposite Rock Star - INXS finalist and West End star MiG Ayesa. She was also privileged to work with Ben Elton during the Hong Kong leg of the tour.

Between stage appearances, Sivan has lent her voice to numerous radio and TV commercials, building a reputation as a prominent voice artist in her native South Africa and abroad. She is currently writing a one-woman show with writer/director Beverley Cooke-Tonessen.

Work on her experimental piece – real life – is ongoing. With the support of a varied and colourful ensemble cast, Sivan continues to cultivate a striking resemblance to herself.
